Nicene Creed Pt.3 (The Holy Spirit) | Ep.18

The latter two sections of the Nicene Creed deal with the person of the Holy Spirit and the second coming of Christ.

The Holy Spirit is called here the “giver of life.” It is only through his indwelling in us that we have life. Scripture tells us that without the Holy Spirit we are dead, and it is through the Holy Spirit’s work that we are taught to pray and love God.  The creed also tells us that the Spirit “spoke by the prophets.” This affirms the belief held even by the Hebrews that while men physically write the words of scripture it is the Holy Spirit that is speaking through them. The creed also states that Spirit proceeds, or is sent, from the Father and the Son, and is to be glorified with them as one.

The creed then shifts to talk about what we as believers look forward to now: “the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.” We are promised that Christ will return at the end of the gospels. Now as the Hebrews waited for the Messiah’s first coming we wait for his return. The creed also reminds us that there is a new life to come. We are saved but not yet fully perfected. When Christ comes again He will make us perfectly holy and bring us into a new and better life with him. The creed reminds us of what we ought to look forward to as we work and wait in the present.
