Nicene Creed | Ep.16
The Nicene Creed is a document that has been handed down through the church since almost the very beginning. The Council of Nicaea was called by the Emperor Constantine in 325 A.D. to address the growing heresy of Arianism. Arius, for whom this heresy is named, taught that Christ was not fully God. This teaching caused much disagreement and strife among the church, so at last church held a council of no less than three hundred church leaders to address the issue. They examined scripture and concluded that Christ did in fact claim to be God, and that for our very salvation it was necessary that he be so. The truths they found in scripture were written down into a document which was to be a confession or profession of what the church ought to believe concerning the Trinity. This document, as later refined, became what we know today as the Nicene Creed.
This document tells us many important things that may or may not be said about the triune God. While God is infinite and we cannot understand him, He has revealed many things about his nature to us. This creed, and several others from the same time, are still commonly used today as a reminder of what it is we as Christians believe of God. This serves a double purpose. First, we are given ready responses to false teachings about the Trinity. Secondly, by a memorization and consistent repetition of such a document we internalize the truth in the words and think on them in our hearts. This will over time, hopefully, lead us to a deeper understanding of who God is and what He has done for us through the gift of salvation.
