What is "The Cave Escape?"

In his Republic, Plato relates acquiring Philosophy to someone escaping from a cave. He imagines a group of men chained in the recesses of a cave, and the only things they see are shadows on the wall created by the people that move in front of a light behind them. As the ones in cave cannot see the true things, they begin to play a game in which they perceive the shadows as the reality.

Next he images that one man is drug kicking and screaming from the cave and shown the light of the outside world. This man first hates the light, and longs to return to his old home, which he understands. But as he becomes acquainted with this new world he quickly recognizes its superiority. However, if he attempts to return to the cave and enlighten his friends, they will reject him as a lunatic because he can no longer play their simple game of shadows. And if he tries to forcibly remove him they will resist and may uprise and kill him for endangering their worldview.

Our blog is meant to be a place that seeks for truth: to “escape the cave.” We seek to uncover and pursue objective truth of creation through an examination of history, music, literature, philosophy, and theology.
